How to leverage agentic AI for scalable AML compliance

The era of merely automating existing compliance processes to gain a competitive advantage is over. In our upcoming State of Financial Crime 2026 survey, 93% of businesses reported using some form of artificial intelligence (AI) solution for anti-money laundering (AML) customer screening, with 87% stating the same for transaction monitoring.

However, not all solutions are created equal. With AI adoption increasingly becoming the new normal in compliance, firms that strategically use advanced technologies, including agentic AI, throughout the financial crime risk management lifecycle will be best able to transform their compliance functions from cost centers into levers for business growth.

As part of our global event series CATALYST, ComplyAdvantage CTO Mark Watson conducted a deep dive into the AI capabilities re-engineering compliance. These capabilities unfold across three key pillars of transformation: operational efficiency, intelligence amplification, and decision confidence.

Going beyond marginal gains by automating routine workflows

The current reality for compliance teams is characterized by inefficiency. Level 1 analysts spend huge amounts of their time and energy – and therefore already stretched compliance budgets – on dealing with noise. This is a fundamentally unsustainable situation, and it’s the product of legacy solutions with inefficiency built in.

The compliance teams of the future need a platform built for scale and speed. ComplyAdvantage Mesh is built entirely on proprietary data with AI powering every stage of the risk management lifecycle, delivering AML screening and monitoring with:

  • Granular customer screening: Customer Screening and Ongoing Monitoring on Mesh lets you adopt as wide or narrow a focus to your screening as necessary, based on the risks you face. On Mesh, you can screen for up to 49 different sub-categories of risk, from sanctions evasion to human trafficking – an unprecedented level of customization and granularity made possible by large language models (LLMs) that enrich raw data with contextual insights, helping you significantly drive down false positives.
  • Agentic AI capabilities: Mesh includes agentic case remediation capabilities, working 24/7 to clear the noise that slows down compliance teams by remediating low-risk alerts while passing on genuinely complex or high-risk cases to human experts. The auto-remediation agent on Mesh is a truly agentic AI system designed to carry out entire workflows, rather than simply completing individual tasks like flagging risks, and can be configured according to various risk-based approaches.
  • Integrated AI: Rather than a superficial bolt-on over disconnected or outdated systems, AI lies at the heart of ComplyAdvantage Mesh. The various stages of data ingestion, screening searches, and auto-remediation work in tandem to progressively eliminate noise, allowing your team to laser-focus on true risks while accelerating customer onboarding at scale. Meanwhile, every decision made feeds back into the system, improving its decision-making capacity even further over time.
  • Agile rule-building: Using Transaction Monitoring on Mesh, analysts can build new rules using natural language, which our AI translates into machine-readable code. This allows teams to implement new rules and scenarios quickly, without having to divert costly IT resources every time they need to adjust the system to reflect emerging typologies and trends.

“As compliance officers, you’re dealing with millions of alerts annually. 60% of them are false positive. Your highly expensive Level 1 analysts are spending more than half their time just on noise. And that’s the bulk of your compliance costs. That time could be spent elsewhere.”

Maximizing insights with intelligence amplification

Legacy compliance solutions are limited by siloed data, slow processing, and a lack of visibility into why alerts are generated. The development of sophisticated AI technologies offers another way. Mesh is built on an AI-powered data engine that continuously turns raw data into actionable intelligence.

Our data ingestion framework processes eight million articles per day, using natural language processing (NLP) to read and categorize these millions of unstructured data points in real-time. LLMs then enrich this data by extracting contextual insights, going far beyond simple name-matching or keyword-based searches in reducing noise while providing genuinely relevant information to analysts. These models can be re-prompted and updated in 20 minutes, enabling unparalleled agility.

This feeds into our proprietary intelligence graph – a ‘data detective’ that maps millions of entities, risks, and relationships in real-time. The graph presents connected, live data, with 6000 additional data points ingested every hour. From these data points, the intelligence graph can infer 20,000 facts, thanks to existing connections made between entities – a 3.5x amplification of information that is fed back into the rest of the compliance process.

As more data enters the system, this ratio will only increase, with the exponential growth enhancing the amount of information analysts can rely on to make informed decisions. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) enriches data with additional relevant contextual information, ultimately allowing compliance software to become an autonomous reasoning system.

Ensuring decision confidence and regulatory transparency

For regulated businesses, confidence in automated decisions is paramount. As regulators intensify their scrutiny of issues such as transparency and fairness in AI-driven systems, efficiency gains achieved through automation will be of little value if they are not accompanied by fully explainable decisions

Mesh eliminates the problem of an AI-based system as a ‘black box’ by hardwiring explainability into every step of the decision chain with:

  • Automatic auditability: Every decision, from initial data ingestion and risk scoring to final auto-remediation, is fully explainable, auditable, and immutable, with complete documentation available for regulatory audits.
  • A unified decision-making system: Rather than using several disconnected AI systems producing conflicting outcomes and explanations, using the same platform for data ingestion, screening and monitoring, and case management provides transparent and coherent explanations that can be confidently shared with regulators and auditors. Because our AI models are built into the system rather than layered on top, they learn from outcomes to constantly improve decision-making and explainability.
  • Inbuilt governance standards: Our team of data and financial crime experts understands that explainability is a competitive advantage, rather than a box to be ticked. Mesh has been designed to ensure transparency and efficiency go hand in hand, with AI systems in place to reduce noise and establish clear logic behind decisions at the same time.

Moving into advanced automation with ComplyAdvantage Mesh

With a comprehensive approach to AI adoption centered around these pillars, firms can make the transition from a limited automation in silos to full-stack automation with agentic capabilities. This shift from a reactive to a proactive approach to financial crime prevention is ultimately what allows organizations to turn compliance into a competitive advantage.

Our Mesh platform has been designed with this transformation in mind. It includes:

Transform your AML compliance with AI-powered solutions
